Magic Starts To Happen

by Simon Hewitt Jones

I've not posted to the MusBook blog in a while, but be assured there's plenty going on behind the scenes. I'm not allowed to say what, as what's in development is top secret! - but rest assured that the MusBook.com site is being scoured closely by all of us here, to see what kind of connections are happening, and what kind of features our users (that's you!) need.

And how heartening it is. A quick browse of MusBook shows new friendships between people in different parts o… Continue

Music & Stroke Victims

This news story on the BBC news website is worth drawing our community's attention. Once again we have scientific evidence to support the idea that music has a beneficial effect on our overall cognitive function.

The profession of Music Therapy now undoubtely represents one career path in music about which one can safely say it will remain a growth area for the foreseeable future!

Handelling the Truth

By Jessica Duchen.

Jessica Duchen is a novelist, music critic and one of the UK's most widely read, and widely respected, writers of music on the net. She maintains a lively, witty (and sometimes irreverent) blog here. We are delighted to welcome her to MusBook.com!

The piece below was also published in a slightly edited… Continue

School music teaching in the UK--a lesson for us all?

by Peter Tregear

Did anyone notice this on the BBC news website today, or indeed hear Howard Goodall being interviewed on the 'Today' programme (you can find a link to an audio clip on the news page)?

The UK government is investing over £300 million pounds over the next 5 years to improve music ed… Continue

Does ‘Classical Music’ exist any more?

by Simon Hewitt Jones

Is Classical Music still a valid term, and if not, what should we be saying instead?

[this is not referring to the Classical period, but to the use of 'Classical' to describe 'Western Art Music']

In response to Peter Tregear's blog post, and the ensuing conversation on MusBook: 'What's in a name?'Continue

How does one view the comments someone has left on one's own page? I can't find a view comment button anywhere on mine.

Fantastic to have the AJ feed on the home page - and the links to favourite blogs etc .... which non-members can access too! A one-stop shop. And IM..
The current conversation via blog post re Beethoven 9 recordings is illuminating. Is there an occasional forum possibility for some sort of comparative discussion of available recordings of other works....or Desert Island Discs etc etc....?

Dear Rachel,

Thanks very much for your kind words and helpful featuring of some of our music on your main page.

As you can see, all the examples were by myself: I would like to have a more balanced view of the orchestra's work, but before posting need to check the legal viability. Is it the case that excerpts under a certain length are allowable, and if so, what is the maximum length?

Another suggestion for MusBook would be a live chat room...

All best,
And good luck as this excellent site continues to grow.

Hello Musbook! I'm thinking about Brendel, Ken Robinson's video and education.... meanwhile, is there any way that new comments/topics for thought can be featured on the home page without having to dig to find them, eg the posts/links for the articles on socially-networked happiness and Leon Botstein's article. Visually, it looks (falsely) as if nothing's new :).. maybe the discussion headings could be periodically rotated. Just a thought. Thank you for enabling so much stimulating input!

Dear Justin,

I would like to make two more suggestions for MusBook.com site:

1. I think it would be a good thing to annex to this site, a classical music torrents section, so that members can share their music between them. This would increase enormously the number of new members.

2. The Forums should be divided into several sections, such as: General Discussions, Orchestral Music, Opera, Choral Music, Technical Discussions etc.

By the way, how the polls' idea worked? The management considered it a good idea?

Hope these ideas of mine don't bother you...

I wish you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Best regards,
Catalin Nicolaes Ravaru
