Simon Hewitt Jones, Violinist

Welcome to my MusBook page!

Simon Hewitt Jones performs internationally as a solo and collaborative violinist.

In 2009, he will make a debut recital tour in the UK performing Poulenc and Stravinsky at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, and at major venues in London, Bristol and Cheltenham. Simon will return to the Middle East in December 2008 for performances of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in Jerusalem and in Palestinian cities, and his group Court Lane Strings will appear in several UK festivals. In September 2008, Court Lane released a world premiere recording of the string chamber music of Imogen Holst which is now available as a CD and digital download. Read More at SimonHewittJones.com >

Update

I imagine that most of my regular readers have disappeared, seeing as I have not written for so long! But no matter. I am deeply committed to blogging, and I will start again in September. Why the silence? I have been working on many things - mostly new incarnations of the same things that I’ve been working on [...]

Spotify - the future of music listening?

The future has arrived! When I was blogging back in 2004, I was dreaming of a time when ‘all-you-can-eat’ music was available. Well, so long as you’re connected to the internet whilst listening, that time has come! A kind of hybrid of Last.fm and a torrent site, Spotify is a massive free-to-stream ad supported music service, [...]

HI, Just read your comments about arts education, in the U.S. and Palestine. Just want to reassure you that it's not a uniform picture in the U.S.--my boys (now highschool kids) both learned to play string instruments at the public school, starting in the fourth grade, one hour a day, every day. One plays the violin, the other the cello. Our elementary school had dedicated full time art and general music teachers (in addition to the orchestra teacher.) Band instruments are taught from the 5th grade on. On the highschool level, there are two levels of orchestra and a number of students that participate in chamber ensembles. We also have a chorus, and a full time Drama teacher. Our highschool has sub-academies--my older son is in the Graphic Arts Academy. We're lucky to be in a school district where people support education and open their wallets. I will say that in Knoxville, the biggest city in our East Tennessee region, they also have string instruction and school orchestras. I guess I'm suggesting to you that the U.S. educational system is not monolithic and certainly we have our problems, but we have some bright spots as well. I just hope that with the economic downturn, we'll be able to continue funding these great programs. Martha Maria

Quote of the Day

"Remember Handel? Who, that was not born
Deaf as the dead to harmony, forgets,
Or can, the more than Homer of his age?"
