Born in |Glasgow, Scotland, in 1935 I was educated at Allan Glen's School. I studied at the RSAMD, University of Glasgow and Jordanhill College of Education. I have been conducting professionally since 1956, my work covering Orchestra, Choir, Brass and Concert Bands and opera. In 1973 I established what was to become the Edinburgh Napier University Symphonic Winds, in addition to conducting the City of Edinburgh Silver Band (1972 -76), Royal Burgh of Linlithgow Reed Band (1972 - 86) Kinneil Colliery Silver Band (1978-81) among others. In 1986 I co-founded the Leith Community Concert Band of which I am still Director of Music.As a player of string and brass instruments my experience includes playing with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Reid Orchestra. and the Royal Opera
I was 26 years on the staff of the School of Music of Edinburgh Napier University teaching Composition and Arranging, Harmony and Counterpoint, Music History and Brass and String practical and Art of Teaching. In 1990 I gained the MMus of Edinburgh University in Composition, Advanced Counter- point with Fugue and Scottish Traditional Music.
In 1982 I joined the Examination Board of the London College of Music and, in 1993, became a Senior Examiner until my retiral in 2006.
My output as a composer includes 2 symphonies, N. 1. in Bb for large symphonic wind band, No.2 for Baritone and Orchestra ("Bugles sang...), Text by Wilfred Owen. The title song of this work in its original setting for voice and piano won 1st. Prize in the Wilfred Owen Centenary Competition of the English Song and Poetry Society in 1993. Other works include a Concertino for Tuba and Orchestra, a Concertino for trombone and Wind Band, a Piano Quartet, Romance for Violin and Wind Band, Three Bagatelles for Piano, Sonatina for unaccompanied Timpani, Diversions for Trumpet, Trombone and Piano, the Opera "Deirdre" completed this year and, recently a "Fantasy Quartet" for Cor Anglais, Bass Clarinet, Viola and 'Cello, scheduled for a premiere in January 2010 with my "Kleines Morgenstern Liederbuch" for Mezzo-soprano, Clarinet (dblg, Bass, Clt) and piano.
