Hmm, here's an expression of the more 'traditional view' of Mendelssohn... This would be a tricky topic in any event, but here he is charting territory that Wagner mapped out, at least in part, in his notorius essay 'The Jew in Music'; and yet--hist…

Mendelssohn at 200 years

Did anyone see this? Does it change anything? The ever-so-slightly breathless tone of this article might suggest that yes it does, but then again Mendelssohn has always been a composer whose music has been thought to reflect so much about who he was. And the connection between his personal… Continue

Happy St Cecilia's Day!

If we thank our patron Saint, the 3rd-century Roman Martyr, for nothing else, it should be for inspiring works like the Purcell and Handel Odes that celebrate music in her name.

Thanks for adding me as a friend! And thank you for posting Dryden's poem to the power of music!! I read some years back about ancient Greek theories on music--how each one of the six modes was believed to arouse a particular emotion in the listener: for example, all martial music was composed in one mode (I forget which one) because it aroused feelings of aggression. Each mode was believed to have the power to evoke very particular feelings and the Greeks USED that power very conciously. I'm still trying to figure out how to view your profile....when I click on your name, I don't see a bio.....am I doing something wrong or have you not posted one yet. Glad to meet you! Martha Maria

Quote of the Day

"Remember Handel? Who, that was not born
Deaf as the dead to harmony, forgets,
Or can, the more than Homer of his age?"
